😇 How Did You Sleep? 😇

Want to Sleep Better? Some Tips You Will Want to Try

Have you ever had nights where it was the worst “sleep” you ever got?

Because it actually took you HOURS to finally get to sleep?

Or you sleep for a few hours but something wakes you up like a blue light? A tiny noise? A list of TO-DO’s that is never ending?

It is so stressful and exhausting.

And I have some tools for you to try. Read on

What you might be noticing the morning after not sleeping well:

-It’s harder to wake up the next morning

-It’s more difficult to focus and be your perky self throughout the day

-Your mood is altered and you rely more on caffeine to get you through. Perhaps you even yell more, or are very curt with others.

-You start fearing the next night of sleep, because what if you can’t sleep then, either? The fear can prevent the next night of sleeping, too.

I have had my share of sleepless nights and I know of someone who has a chronic issue and is still trying to find the magic bullet to finally turn off the brain to sleep properly. Sleep studies, nutritionists, various herbs
nothing has worked so far. It is maddening because there are so many reasons that you might not be sleeping well. And when it’s a chronic condition, it can seriously affect your health, as I am sure you already know.

What’s important to do when you are wanting to fix something (anything!) is to write down the problems. Write down all the details, everything you think might be part of it. It helps us objectify it. It makes it less personal. And we look at it with less shame. It helps us find solutions in the appropriate places. It helps us feel we are not alone, because we can share this list with doctors, friends, anyone on your support team. The more we feel connected and in solve mode, the more likely we will be to find the solution.

Why might you not be sleeping well?

  1. You have so much on your plate, your overwhelm is working overtime to solve the problems of your world, and perhaps even of THE world.

  2. Your nutrition is off. Have you gotten any tests that can tell you if you are deficient in nutrients, minerals and vitamins. Many people are surprisingly deficient in certain minerals that help you sleep better!

  3. You’re stressed. From work, from relationships, from financial burdens that popped up or have been long-standing.

  4. You’re working out a problem, or many problems, and when you finally stop doing all those things you do during the day, your brain can finally have the space and time to work out your problems.

  5. Your environment is not conducive to sleeping. Your kids wake you up, there’s light coming in through the window. You are working in bed and your associations with your bedroom are not sleep related.

Solutions to try out:

It is important to keep a routine for winding down at the end of the day. As kids need wind down time, we do too! Turn off the tv an hour before bed, read or meditate, lower the lights or even get a red light (Hooga lights are amazing!) to tell your brain its night time. If you have things you want to do tomorrow, write it down in a journal or your calendar, so your brain knows it won’t be forgotten.

Keep your work out of the bedroom. Make sure the colors, scents and experience creates calm and relaxation.

And for all the stresses and boundary issues, family frustrations it’s important to set yourself in a balanced position. Journaling helps you express your feelings and get them out of your body.

We are not meant to chase our tails and stress all the time, so if you are, it might be time to consider why and how you are doing that for yourself.

If you are chasing your tail and sabotaging your progress then perhaps it’s time for a reset, a setting of a new foundation. Are you ready to create that yet? You can do it. Even the smallest shift will create great change.

A great first step is to start with my book, Becoming Ridiculously Awesome, because it literally helps reset your foundation as you read it. If you want to check out other books that have helped me immensely on my path, click here for my list of favorites towards the bottom of the page.
